Kick off meeting of the LIFE MIX_FERTILIZER project

The Kick off meeting of LIFE MIX_FERTILIZER is held in CARTIF Technology Centre. The consortium partners are CARTIF, the Soria provincial centre of young farmers (ASAJA –Soria), and the companies Purines Almazan SL (PURAL SL) and Servimed SL.

This project aims to develop an innovative system for the treatment of the waste from the anaerobic digestion of pig manure (digestate) and its subsequent agricultural recovery. Project activities were started in September 2013 and will extend for 3 years to result in a new type of fertilizer with an organic / mineral base and gradual release.

The actions will be developed mainly in the province of Soria (Spain). Thus, a stripping prototype will be installed at the biogas plant owned by PURAL in Almazán (Soria, Spain) for the recovery of nitrogen from the liquid fraction of the digestate. In addition, the solid fraction will be composted with other organic wastes such as vegetable biomass or chicken manure.

Servimed will produce the new fertilizers into pellets, by the combination of the mineral and organic fractions previously obtained with a nitrification inhibitor to control the nitrogen release. CARTIF will evaluate the Carbon Footprint of the process and carry out the Life Cycle Assessment of the new products.

Finally, ASAJA-Soria will evaluate the effectiveness of the new fertilizers in controlled wheat trials, both rainfed and irrigated. Because of their dual nature, the new fertilizers will have a number of environmental and economic benefits over currently marketed products such as soil quality improvement, minimization of nitrogen losses through nitrate leaching, GHG emissions reduction, agricultural yields increase and cost reduction by a single application.

MIX_FERTILIZER project is funded by the EU through the LIFE + call with a budget of more than € 1.2 M.
